These shims are used on the two water pump housing studs that do not have a gasket. Without these shims, the water pump housing will be “cocked” on the front housing due to the thickness of the gasket, and may cause leaking or cracking of the housing.
Two of these shims are used on all rotaries before 1989, and also on 93-95 motors. They are not used on 89-92 engines as the step is built into the water pump housing.
