Note: The most correct fix is to buy the complete shift control lever end, part number 17-46Y0-M510. Mazda doesn’t sell JUST the bushing for the 89-91 (S5) transmission lever bottom “receiver”. You have to buy the whole receiver for $60+. Then, to install it the transmission must be removed from the car and the tailshaft housing removed from the transmission. Our carbon fiber bushing can be installed without removing or disassembling the transmission for a quick fix. We still recommend replacing the whole part the next time the transmission is out to do a clutch.

Instructions for 89-91 Shifter Bushing Installation

1) Remove ALL of old nylon bushing. Be sure there are NO pieces left in the bottom of the metal “receiver”.

2) Put the new bushing on the end of the tool supplied — “fingers” end down toward the transmission. Maybe a bit of grease on it to hold it to the tool.

3) If your trans still has the shifter return spring then it needs to be held “out of the way”. Use combos of screwdrivers etc. We Have never found a “nice” way — we just mush around to get it out of the way.

4) Install the new bushing – it is not really that hard. Just be sure to hold the tool perpendicular to the metal “receiver” and tap the bushing in – the shoulder on the tool positions the bushing at the correct height.
